Self-Care Enchantments – Feb 21st, 2008

Do you use your body and drive it like a vehicle?  Do you feel like you are a talking head  and anything from your neck down is an accessory? Or, do you fully inhabit and “embody” your physical self?  During the over 20 years that I was in health care, we would see many folks who were suffering from burnout.  They were getting colds, infections, were getting injured frequently and were very tired.  These folks had been “driving” their bodies, like we drive our cars, not listening to the warning beeps, lights and indicators telling them they were on empty.  These folks had separated their bodies from their minds.

Does this feel familiar to you?

Right now, sitting at your computer, can you “feel” your left middle toe?  What about your right thigh, your right kidney or your left ovary?  How about your spine, your left lung, your third eye?  Where does your body consciousness start and stop?  How aware are you of your body?  How fully do you “inhabit” yourself?

Fully inhabiting and listening to your body, increases your mind-body connection, enhances your sense of self, your body wisdom and helps to re-enchant your life!  Try out the following self-care enchantments this week.

Self- Care Enchantments

1.    Every morning, just as you wake up and before you get out of bed, do a quick body scan.  Starting at your feet and swooping up your body, envision and connect with all parts of your physical body.  Check in for messages, tightness, pain, softness, areas that need further investigation.
2.    Use all five of your senses to be mindful of your body and your environment.
3.    Tune in and ask your body what it needs to be nourished and lovingly cared for, carefully listen for the subtle answers and messages.

"Inrageous/Outrageous Self-Care Enchantments" aka Tips for Feb 14, 2008

Happy Valentines Day!

How often do you think of yourself as your own valentine?  How often to you give yourself the care and attention that you give to others?  How often do you soften your heart and give yourself love?

Today and this week, in addition to all the other people in your life that you wish to honour and recognize on Valentines Day, make YOU your valentine too.

Catherine Ingram, in her excellent book “Passionate Presence: Experiencing the Seven Qualities of Awakened Awareness” talks about “heart language”.  She says “Heart language has one thing in common the world over.  It is the quiet offering of understanding to others without the demand for being understood oneself.”

I say to use heart language with yourself and give yourself the “offering of quiet understanding”.  Enchant your life and your heart this week with the following self-care enchantments:

Self-Care Enchantments

1. Start your day with a “loving kindness” meditation or prayer, say it a few times in the morning while in a calm and relaxed state.  It goes like this:
May I be filled with loving kindness
May I be well
May I be peaceful and at ease
May I be happy.

2. Give yourself the quiet offering of patience, understanding, loving care and attention.  Make YOU your valentine and give yourself a valentine’s gift.

3.  “Think with your heart and love with your mind” this week.

Question of the Week – Feb 14, 2008

How do you “refuse to be pulled into the cultural drift of complacency”?  I call this daily refusal “misbehaving”!  Please share all the ways, (large and small) with us.

Thanks for your participation.

Celebrate International Women's Day Early, March 5th in Vancouver

Join us March 5th for a celebration of International Women’s Day at the “Misbehaving Women of the Year” Event.

The “Misbehaving Woman of the Year” Event is based on the Laurel Thatcher Ulrich quote “well behaved women seldom make history” and honors women who have dared to make a difference, taken a risk and enhanced the lives of women in her community.  This award is intended to recognize “regular” women who in the course of their daily lives exhibit heart, soul and “misbehaving”.

Attend this event and:

– honour “misbehaving women” in your community.

– help out the Avalon Women’s Centres (which support women in recovery from addictions)

– enjoy a complimentary restorative yoga class

– nibble on delectable Indian appies

– learn about a wonderful women’s co-op in Nepal from our keynote speaker, Glynnis Osher-Anderson of The Mystic Masala (www.themysticmasala.com)

– participate in a clothing swap (all un-swapped clothes go to the “Avalon Closet”).

– enjoy the company of other women!

and
