Women ~ Life ~ Health: Family Summer Vacations

Yes, it is possible to go on a fun sailing holiday with adult ‘kids’.

Our experience is that everyone reverts to childhood, even the parents (part of the time). We have hot cocoa and bedtime stories (the difference is they tell them to us) and tons of reading and candles and charades, lots of laughs and lots of hugs!

In case you are interested, I’m currently reading “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed for our book club discussion in September!

Enjoy your beautiful summer day and hug your kids extra lots.

Women ~ Health ~ Life: Nature & Spirituality

It is said in many spiritual traditions that sunrise and sunset are those times of day when the veil between the physical world and the spiritual world is the thinnest.

Personally, I find sunrise and sunset to be magical.

If I can, I pause and say a prayer of thanks and gratitude for all my life’s blessings.

I would like to share the photo of a magical sunset from the Gulf Islands of BC that I experienced last night.

Women ~ Life ~ Health: Sailing As A Mindfulness Exercise

There’s nothing like sailing to keep one mindful and in the present!

Today, crossing the entrance to Nanaimo Harbour, we came across all manner of watercraft. One certainly needs to be aware and observant. We saw dragon boaters, other sail boats, kayakers, ferries, swimmers and power boats.

It really is a metaphor for life and the wide variety of personalities one encounters. If we are ‘awake’ and mindful, we are open to the complexities and layering of relationships and appreciative of difference.

Enjoy your one ‘wild & precious’ day!

Women ~ Health ~ Life: Re-Invigorating The Powerful Wise Woman Archetype

In many cultures and areas of the world, elder women are respected for their wisdom and life experience. Their aged beauty shines brightly and a depth of spirit is often evident.

In our modern North American ‘youth obsessed’ culture, elder women, and being one myself, seem to be made invisible.

Having never really experienced discrimination (other than subtle gender discrimination), being on the receiving end of ageism is quite an interesting experience and very humbling. To my surprise, it feels like it comes more from young women than from young men, however this opinion could be slightly skewed due to the company I keep.

My life lessons about aging include learning to be gracious in my age and to increasingly honor and respect those older and wiser than I!

So, I shall do my part to re-invigorate the powerful, beautiful, older, wise woman archetype and model respect of those who have walked many years on this dusty road of life.

In peace & mindfulness,

Zoey

Women ~ Health ~ Life: Mindfulness Based Body Centered Life Coaching

I talk about my style of coaching as being a matrix, with the following concepts and pairs layered and angled: art & science, yin & yang, mind & heart, body & soul, broad & deep, eastern & western etc! I add to this blend my life experience and various forms of formal training to create a blend of coaching for the body, mind and soul.

Two wonderfully valuable resources that have informed my practice are listed below:

‘Wise Heart: A Guide to the Universal Teachings of Buddhist Psychology” by Jack Kornfield

And

“Body Centered Coaching: Using the Body as a Resource For Change” by Marlena Field, PCC, CPCC

Enjoy this magnificent day!

Women ~ Health ~ Life: A Summer Sailing Vacation Nourishes My Soul

I am slowly feeling re-energized and have been reminded how important it is to take time off!

Recently, and totally unconsciously, I got back on the treadmill, albeit, a ‘health’ treadmill. I over did ‘life’ by over scheduling and even though it was all activities I love, my energy was depleted.

Life coaches should know better, right?

Well, this life coach miscalculated. I felt the adrenalin rush from thinking I could do it all, from feeling almost invincible. My body feels different too, shallower breathing, and a kind of vibrating intensity.

So, now, I’m sitting on our sailboat, in Plumper Cove, off Keats Island, on the Sunshine Coast of BC, being gently rocked by the sea.

Ahhh, this is nourishment for my body and soul.

Women ~ Life ~ Friends: Books & A Surprising Discovery

Knowing that I would be leaving soon on a sailing holiday and may not have wifi access, I was determined to download significant quantities of literary fiction to my ipad.

I did a ‘call out’ on my personal facebook page for book suggestions and what evolved was an interesting and eclectic list of great recommendations.

As an aside… during my recent prenatal yoga teacher training, I found it rather trying to be spoken to loudly and in a well enunciated cadence by a perky twenty something (with 1 kid) prenatal yoga instructor who seemed to think that those  of us over 40 were not only older but hard of hearing. Judgments, judgements, judgments!

Suffice it to say that last night, I was very happy to see the book recommendations were from wise older women (and one guy who receives the distinction of being an honorary wise woman)!  I am thrilled with such a diverse selection of reading material and thanks to my ipad, bringing 20 books sailing is a possibility.

So, I will sail and blog and provide book reviews…

I usually have 3 – 4 books on the ‘go’ at any given time; 1 fiction, 1 non-fiction, 1 spiritually fulfilling and 1 general interest.

Currently, I am reading:

“Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn (fiction- love it so far, my fave section is about the cherries and family of psychologists)

“Wild” by Cheryl Strayed (non-fiction – not sure about hiking that far by myself, yikes!)

Just finished:

“Mating in Captivity” by Esther Perel (personal growth and development – is monogamy really dead?)

which prompted me to read:

“The Enlightened Sex Manual” by David Deida (spiritual enlightenment and marriage saving)

OK, where was I?

Yes, aging in a culture that adores youthfulness in women is very humbling!

I shall immerse myself in stories of thrilling tales of wild women while sailing the Salish Sea!

in peace & mindfulness,

Zoey

Women ~ Life ~ Health: The Beauty in Illness & Life Lessons!

So, I’m at home with the flu, in the middle of summer and right before my annual summer sailing holiday! One might say, that I am humbled! Yes, humbled, especially after some of my recent peppy and ‘conscious’ posts about yoga teacher training and all.

I will spare you the symptoms, however, what I want to share are some personal key life lessons:

1. Do not, under any circumstances become ‘cocky’ about your health!

2. Do not think that you can work 19 days straight, even though you are a life coach and fledging yogini.

3. Do not share water glasses and cutlery with daughters who have the flu!

4. OK, hmmmm, this gives me a chance to get organized …..

Notice the ‘turn around’ here…

5. “Sick” days can be blessings as I have uninterrupted time to catch up on paperwork and planning.

6. Yes, the world, family, work, can survive without me!

7. My body does send messages and listen earlier to fatigue and soreness.

8. “Sick” days give me total ‘white space’ and now I have many interesting and creative ideas spawning.

9. I’ve had a chance to computer connect with friends as I am in bed all day with my laptop.

10. I am forced to slow down, stop, listen to the birds and simply breathe.

11. I feel justified in asking for help.

12. I have time to research further yoga teacher training.

13. I can write many blog postings to tweak while I’m away on the boat.

14. Hey, it’s all perfect! At some level I totally created just what I need today … time to rest, read & write!

Don’t ya just love the ‘self-talk’?

Enjoy your beautfiul day/

Women ~ Life ~ Health: An Inspirational Rumi Quote to Start the Day!

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
People are coming back and forth across the doorsill
Where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.
