Women ~ Life ~ Health: The Power of Gratitude

The Power of Gratitude

When I am coaching, a question I often ask is, “what is the one thing, that if you did it consistently, would have the greatest positive impact on your life”?  I hear answers like exercise more, drink less coffee, lose weight.  While all of these activities no doubt will be positive, I’m reminded, as women how we are so busy, “doing”, feeling like we need to change ourselves and seldom stop to just be more of who we are.

I recently had occasion to ponder “the question” and my “year in review”.  I sank into the stillness of my home and began listing what I was thankful for.  What I realized was that it is the very small, simple things in life that bring me the greatest joy and sense of fulfillment, not tasks and certainly not “self-improvement projects.  I get a sense of fulfillment from hings like hearing my children laughing, the mist over the water, the depth and comfort of a longstanding friendship.

As I sat that early morning, I was reminded that the positive impact was a result, not of doing but of being, of allowing myself reflective time to sink into the “beingness” of me and open to the power of thanksgiving, gratitude and blessings. For me, using gratitude and blessing brings a feeling of putting on the “rose coloured glasses”, a feeling of objectivity, a sense of expansiveness.

I was challenged recently in my commitment to this belief when faced with an unexpected and painful loss.  I found myself slipping into a place of hurt, blame and criticism.  The word “blessing” popped into my mind and I quickly said a blessing for the situation.  It went something like this; “blessings on this situation as I know that it is all for the best and that through the pain and sadness, a greater good will come.”  By saying those words I was able to set aside the “righteous victim voice” of “poor me” and had the sense of an easing and softening of my emotions.

So, ask yourself, the earlier question, “what is the one thing if integrated into your life regularly, would have the greatest positive impact”?  Experiment with using blessings, gratitude and thanksgiving and feel yourself open into a deeper sense of your “beingness”.  Start by making a list of at least 20 things that you are thankful for.  Every day, give yourself time to sink into your “beingness” and feel gratitude.  Send out blessings to your friends, family, all people and situations and imagine the world taking on a rosy glow!

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

Women ~ Health ~ Life: Sunday Sacredness

I’ve had the opportunity recently to reflect on the precious ‘fleetingness’ of life and I find my heart blossoming with compassion.

Compassion for myself, my family and friends; compassion for the children of the world; compassion for my co-workers; compassion for my community and deep, deep compassion for those who are so filled with hate that they feel violence is a solution.

I also feel blessed to be alive, fully able to experience life and the pain, joy, and love that comes with being a mindful human ‘bean’ (as one of our daughters used to say).

So, this morning my friends, I wish you a blessed day from the bottom of my heart.

May we all live in peace.

Women ~ Health ~ Life: Heart Centered Self Care for Life Balance

You Deserve To Take Care Of You!

I remember when I returned from an extended stay in Yelapa, Mexico which included the final week as the women’s coaching and yoga retreat which I organized and facilitated.  During this break and retreat from “usual life” I had the opportunity to reflect, renew and review.  I was reminded  again of the importance of calming ourselves and self care and how many of us can get so caught up in being caring of others that we forget to take care of ourselves.

Over the past few months I have been re-reading Jack Kornfield’s excellent book, “A Path With Heart” and during the retreat we discussed the section about the paradox of being “selfless” or having “no self” and having a healthy and strong “sense of self” and “true self”.  Kornfield says “There are two parallel tasks in spiritual life.  One is to discover selflessness, the other is to develop a healthy sense of self.  Both sides of that apparent paradox must be fulfilled for us to awaken.”  I would say that this can be applied to general life as well as spiritual life and helps to clarify the definition of “self-care”.  Life coaches often talk about “self-care” and how important it is to put yourself at the top of the list.

For clarity, “inrageous/outrageous self care enchantments aka tips”, are tips that are designed to support you to develop a healthy sense of self (your inrageous or inner work), so that you can go out into the world in your relationships, duties and obligations from a strong personal foundation and center.  The metaphor that is often used is that of being on a plane and the safety talk, where the flight attendant reinforces that if you are traveling with children, that it is important to put your own oxygen mask on first, then help your kids with their mask.  The principle is that if you are not being “well oxygenated”, you can’t help others.

So, the self-care is about taking care of you! It is about self reflection and self-awareness and enchanting both your inner and outer lives, it is about creating a healthy sense of self.

Self-care enchantments for you:

  1. Create time for yourself everyday, even if it is 5 minutes and reflect on what nourishes and enchants you.
  2. Put yourself at the top of your priority list.
  3. Let go of one “should do” this upcoming week.
Have a wonderful day my friends!

Women ~ Health ~ Life: What Is Life Coaching Anyway?

What Is Life Coaching Anyway:  Some Distinctions

  1. Coaching is most often described as:

~ a partnership, thought partner, action partner, sounding board.

  1. The coaching relationship assumes that the client already knows what is their best solution.
  2. The coach’s role is to help clarify and uncover those solutions through observation and questions.

Coaching Outcomes

a.  The client is self-generating:  that is, beyond the coaching relationship, clients can integrate coaching principles for themselves to maintain perspective and create their own solutions independent of the coach.

This is the Enlighten Principle ~ shedding light to give focus.

b.  The client is self-correcting:  that is, clients are conscious of their own process so they can make adjustments to their communication, actions, and way of being in the midst of their lives.

This is the Empower Principle ~ accessing power through trustworthy relationships.

c.  There are long-term measurable results:  that is, objective observation confirms what the coach and client understand is happening.  The results are exceptional by the client and other’s standards.

This is the Excel Principle ~ achieving results beyond the imaginable.

Coaching Applications

Whole Life Coaching: A powerful partnership designed to forward and enhance the lifelong process of human learning, effectiveness, and fulfillment.

Benefits of Whole Life Coaching:

  • Greater sustainable results in less time. Goals!
  • A higher quality of life.
  • Stronger communication skills and relationships.
  • Greater self-esteem.
  • Better decisions making strategies.
  • Greater clarity professionally and personally.
  • Focus on a life values, a life plan, mission and vision.

Women ~ Health ~ Life: An Unbelievable Spa Experience

I absolutely loved my spa experience at Scandinave Spa in Whistler!

Right from the short drive north of Whistler to returning to our car, I felt nourished and nurtured by the natural elements of nature!

Being of Scandinavian and German heritage, the benefits of hydrotherapy and mineral baths were instilled in me at a young age. I have continued to use these simple therapies throughout my life, with gentle health benefits.

I’ve mentioned here before of how us life coaches reinforce the importance of self awareness, knowledge of personal values & needs and self-care.

In the spirit of self-care, one of my daughters and I took ourselves off to Whistler last weekend for a weekend of rest, rejuvenation and self care. We were fortunate to be able to soak up the wonderful energy of Wanderlust Yoga and Music Festival and participated in a fabulous community yoga class with Michael Franti and Seane Corn.

On the Friday, I had booked us into the Scandinave Spa for the baths, steam, sauna and a therapeutic massage.

We parked our car and embarked on a three hour blissful experience, starting with a gentle winding path through the forest, to the rustic, elegant and beautiful spa. We checked in and received our thick white robes, towels and orientation. Most appreciated was the reminder that other than the lobby and bistro the rest of the spa is ‘silence’ only,

After a delicious, simple & healthy lunch, we started with the rotation of hot therapy (steam, hot pools, sauna), cold water therapy and relaxation. Our favorite hot therapy was the eucalyptus steam room and we both enthusiastically jumped into the cold Nordic plunge pool and falls. Numerous indoor and outdoor relaxation areas are available.

After 2 hours of invigorating and relaxing water therapies, we spent 20 minutes or so in ‘hammock haven’ before our delicious and therapeutic massages with RMTs.

We were both glowing and raving about the experience as we slowly and meditatively returned to our car down the winding forest pathway.

I highly recommend this health spa experience to any one visiting Whistler! I found the pricing to be very reasonable and the total experience to be fantastic! You can check out the website and I do recommend booking ahead.

The Scandinave Spa is nourishing for your mind, body and soul!
