Topaz Lotus Living: Loreto Bay Vacation

Loreto Bay Vacation

There’s nothing like a vacation for long stretches of un-interrupted reading!

So far, Kaitlin and I have both finished ‘The Hypnotist’ by Lars Kepler (dark psychological thriller); Kaitlin is now reading ‘Gone Girl’ by Gillian Flynn, which coincidently is my pick for our women’s book club this month. I finished ‘Gone Girl’ in the fall and found it to be a surprising read. I like that, when a book surprises me!

Delaney finished ‘The Hobbit’ and is almost through ‘Lord of the Rings’ by Tolkien.

I’ve recently started ‘The Nightmare’, also by Lars Kepler. Interesting that Lars Kepler is a ‘writing couple’, not an individual.

Wayne reads the news and his Spanish books, he’s not a fiction lover.

Next up for me is ‘Sea of Cortez’ by John Steinbeck.

Topaz Lotus Living: El Corazon in Loreto Bay

I want to do a big Canadian shout out for El Corazon, ‘Mexican Heart, Global Soul’, an amazing coffee/espresso bar in Loreto Bay and owned/managed by Jennifer (from Vancouver), and Paola (a Mexican citizen).

Firstly, the coffee drinks are amazing, the fresh squeezed juice is very refreshing and healthy and the atmosphere is friendly, funky and upscale. We have yet to sample the food and now have to wait until after New Years Day for this treat.

Not surprisingly, Jen & Paola hired an experienced Vancouver barista, Kailie, however, imagine our surprise when it turns out Kailie was also in class with one of our daughters at Langara. It truly is a small world with one global soul.

El Corazon is closed on Sunday, and opens at 8 am other days. The cafe serves breakfast and light lunches featuring fresh local ingredients. Signature beverages include the range of coffee drinks of course, as well as fresh squeezed juices and healthy smoothies. I hear the ‘green monster’ smoothie is one of the most popular and I love the fresh juice mix of carrot, beet, apple, ginger and cucumber.

For the Loreto Bay locals or if you are driving down the Baja, make it a priority to stop by El Corazon!

Topaz Lotus Living: Loreto’s Del Borracho Saloon & Grill

It was a chance encounter with Maria, one of the new owners of Del Borracho, that led us to this very authentic saloon and grill for good old cheeseburgers and fries. We find that while traveling, comfort food from home is needed on occasion.

It seems like del Borracho is a popular restaurant for those driving the Baja as it is just off the transpeninsular near Loreto. Many tourists doing a day trip to the San Javier Mission also start their day with a homestyle farm breakfast at the saloon.

Three of us had the cheeseburgers (fabulous) and fries. Due to the fries taking longer than expected, we were also presented with a complimentary order of nachos (totally unsolicited). We also enjoyed the old fashioned, creamy milkshakes! Kaitlin ordered the toasted turkey club with coleslaw and she enjoyed it, although, I noticed her eyeing our cheeseburgers with envy!

We enjoyed the food, lively atmosphere and great service at del Borracho and highly recommend a visit! All that was missing from the authentic saloon atmosphere was a drunken brawl.

Enjoy your day!

Topaz Lotus Living: a Loreto Bay Sunrise

It’s pretty spectacular to enjoy a sunrise such as this while enjoying a cup of great coffee, sitting on the beach with my favorite people!

Have a wonderful day friends.

Women ~ Health ~ Life: The Importance of Connection & Community

We have been exploring Mexico over the past 20 years or so, with the view of putting down roots.

As a family, we fell in love with the Mexican people and culture when we hosted Mexican homestay students learning English in Vancouver.

We also fell in love with the Baja, traveling here initially in 1990. We experienced the early days of San Jose del Cabo and fondly remember waking up to see cows munching on the golf course!

Over the years we have explored the Mayan Riviera (love Isla Mujeres), the Pacific Coast and Bay of Banderas, spending many holidays in the quaint and beautiful Puebla of Yelapa, where we made many friends.

Our criteria for ‘settling down’ however, includes the possibility of driving and due to this and the fact that it is not possible to purchase real estate in Yelapa and with the Cabo area being so busy and developed, we have ‘settled on’ the gorgeous community of Loreto!

Here’s a view from our beach chair the other day ….

Enjoy!

Women ~ Health ~ Life: A Poem for the Season

“The angels were all singing out of tune,
and hoarse with having little else to do,
excepting to wind up the sun and moon
or curb a runaway young star or two.”

Lord Byron

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays my friends.

Women ~ Health ~ Life: Renaming ‘Sick’ Days – ‘Wellness Days’

As a ‘team leader’ and a life coach for women, I think it would be grand if we renamed ‘sick days’ – ‘wellness days’!  Everyone could be trained on how to be attuned with their physical bodies and to notice the very early body messages that they need a ‘wellness day’ or two.

This approach includes regular yoga and meditation and other body centered practices, to enhance the health and well being of the individual, family and/or organization.

We could be supported to create our ‘wellness support team’; of massage therapists, life coaches, yoga instructors and naturopaths for example.

At this very busy time of year, it is extra important to stay attuned to our bodies and listen to the messages from within!

Vancouver Yoga Workshop: Honoring & Witnessing

Good Day!

During this special season of many religious and spiritual festivals, it feels fitting to include daily yoga in my spiritual practice and deepen my understanding and knowledge of all body centered practices!

As someone who works with women who have come from backgrounds of trauma, I am honored to attend the “Trauma Sensitive Yoga Therapy Workshop” today at Open Door Yoga in Vancouver. Open Door is also the studio where I am enrolled to do my 200 hour yoga training.

I am so interested to learn how we can use profoundly simple, yet powerful body centered practices to re-inhabit our bodies and release and healed stored traumas.
