Women | Health | Life: A Powerful Quote from a Wise Woman

As a life, executive and organizational coach in the helping professions, I often encounter folks who are trying to ‘fix’ others.

Deborah Adele, author of “The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga’s Ethical Practice” has a beatiful and wise way of speaking about this.

‘When we are unwilling to look deeply and courageously into our own lives, we can easily violate others in many subtle ways that we may not even be aware of, thinking that we are actually helping them.

Thinking we know what is better for others becomes a subtle way we do violence. When we take it upon ourselves to ‘help’ the other we whittle away at their sense of autonomy. Nonviolence asks us to trust the other’s ability to find the answer they are seeking. It asks us to have faith in the other, not feel sorry for them. Nonviolence asks us to trust the other’s journey and love and support others to their highest image of themselves, not our highest image of them. It asks that we stop managing ourselves, our experience, others, and others’ experiences of us. Leave the other person free of our needs, free to be themselves and free to see us as they choose.’

Powerful words and indeed, the foundational philosophy of the ‘coaching relationship’.

Women ~ Health ~ Life: Words of Wisdom About Letting Go

‘Words of Wisdom’ to start your day:

‘A bird cannot hold its perch and fly. Neither can we grasp anything and be free.’

~ Deborah Adele

Deborah, in this chapter of her book ‘The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga’s Ethical Practice’ is writing about
‘Aparigrapha’ or ‘non-attachment’ and also says ‘Nonattachment does not mean that we don’t care. In fact, no attachment freeze us up to be immersed in appreciation of life and one another.’

I find the practice of ‘aparigrapha’ to be an interesting dance of observing and separating cultural and familial conditioning and expectations from the present moment.

Enjoy this moment in time.

Women’s Health Tips for Your Body, Mind and Soul

Two new concept applications to learn more about are ‘tensegrity’ and ‘FODMAPS ‘.

I’ve been researching both of these concepts first as part of my yoga teacher training (tensegrity) and then during an invigorating coffee meeting (chai tea for me) with a long time friend and fellow critical thinker Catherine Morley, I learned more about FODMAPS (components in food that mimic a gluten sensitivity).

If any of the above piques your interest, check it out for yourself.

Buckminster Fuller originally talked about ‘tensegrity’ as applying to the connective tissue of the human body.

Dr Shepard is the main researcher into FODMAPS , and if you have unexplained fatigue, aches, bloating and tummy trouble, you may wish to learn more.

Monday Mornings: Work Life Balance

Monday Morning Words of Wisdom

I entered my office this morning with a sigh of relief!

Even though our daughters are adults who live with us, not young children, life at home is busy. I don’t have any control over which dishes are casually left on the coffee table, how much milk is in the fridge in the morning or if there is enough coffee.  It is somewhat surprising that I still need to be concerned about life work balance!

My office is quiet, it’s serene, the jumble on my desk is my own doing and I’m happy it’s Monday morning!

Have a great day.

Vancouver Yoga Workshop: Honoring & Witnessing

Good Day!

During this special season of many religious and spiritual festivals, it feels fitting to include daily yoga in my spiritual practice and deepen my understanding and knowledge of all body centered practices!

As someone who works with women who have come from backgrounds of trauma, I am honored to attend the “Trauma Sensitive Yoga Therapy Workshop” today at Open Door Yoga in Vancouver. Open Door is also the studio where I am enrolled to do my 200 hour yoga training.

I am so interested to learn how we can use profoundly simple, yet powerful body centered practices to re-inhabit our bodies and release and healed stored traumas.

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”
~ Mary Oliver from the poem A Summers Day

Women ~ Health ~ Life: An Inspirational Quote & Poem by Mary Oliver

Enjoy this beautiful poem and words of wisdom by wise woman Mary Oliver
and
what do you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

The Summer Day

Who made the world?

Who made the swan, and the black bear?

Who made the grasshopper?

This grasshopper, I mean–

the one who has flung herself out of the grass,

the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,

who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down,

who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.

Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.

Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.

I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down

into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,

how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,

which is what I have been doing all day.

Tell me, what else should I have done?

Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?

Tell me, what is it you plan to do

with your one wild and precious life?

~ Mary Oliver ~
