Loving Kindness Meditation: 3 Easy Steps

I first learned about ‘loving kindness meditation’ when I read the book “A Path With Heart” by Jack Kornfield. My friend Victoria Pawlowski recommended the book and Victoria and another friend, Carolena Ranger have gone on to found ‘The Center for Compassion Inspired Health’ which incorporate the tenets of loving kindness meditation and self compassion.

Reading “A Path With Heart” was life changing as it was with the reading that I started a daily meditation practice. I found the way Jack Kornfield writes about meditation clear and heartfelt.

For myself, the most effortless way to evoke the feeling of love and good intentions is to bring to ‘mind and heart’ my children when they were little and my grandson Madz. Thinking of Madz never fails to bring a smile to my face and crack my heart wide open. I can then include myself and a wide variety of others in my best intentions for good health, happiness and a life filled with peacefulness and ease.

You can try it for yourself with these three easy steps:

1. Sit comfortably in a quiet space. Take 3 deep in and out breaths.
2. Bring to mind a person, animal or environment that evokes feelings of love.
3. From the ‘feeling place’ of love send out to yourself and others wishes and intentions for good health, contentment, peace, a life well lived.

While this is a very simplistic, basic model, it gives a taste for what can be incorporated easily into one’s life. In addition to Jack Kornfield’s fabulous book, there are other wonderful books to help you with your practice. Another one I would highly recommend is “Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness” by Sharon Salzberg

Why practice Loving Kindness Meditation? In addition to the obvious real time blissful feelings one experiences, research conducted by Barbara Fredrickson at the University of North Carolina found that folks who had done 7 weeks of loving-kindness meditation experienced a significant increase in positive emotions, personal resources and good health.

Like any new behaviour, practicing helps, so try to set aside 10-20 minutes every day for your meditation practice.

Happy Thanksgiving Day to My American Friends & Family!

Happy American Thanksgiving

We recently participated in a wonderful extended family reunion of a bunch of Americans and Canadians of various faith traditions and belief systems.

My own family of origin and offspring are clustered around Vancouver BC and Houston TX.

So today, we remember in mindfulness and thanksgiving, the blessings of family and friends; of traditions and rituals; of giving thanks to the land; of honouring Nature and all people and generations.

Happy Thanksgiving my friends.

Sacred Sunday: Words of Wisdom

A Beautiful Quote:

“You hold in your hand an invitation:

To remember the transforming power of forgiveness
and loving kindness.

To remember that no matter where you are and what you face, within your heart,

peace is possible.”

~ Jack Kornfield

Women | Life | Wisdom: Dreaming

Do you believe that we can communicate through dreams?

I am very curious about this and after an unbelievably wonderful dream last night about a friend from university, I would like to believe we do.

I know there are stories about this, about people sharing dreams, non local ways of knowing and the like. Rupert Sheldrake writes about these ideas and ancient tradition keepers would say ‘of course we do’.

I am grateful for my wonderful dream and am resting in the feelings of being loved and cherished.

Enjoy your day my friend!

Oh Wow! Shoot For the Stars!

Ten years or so ago, my husband and I were on a holiday to Los Cabos, staying at The Melia. On one of our walks, we went up to the Cabo Real Golf Course and standing on the crest of a hill, with an incredible vista before us, made a pact that within ten years, we would have purchased a condo in Cabo. At that time, we had no idea how to accomplish this as with three daughters in the ‘orthodontic’ phase and headed towards College, finances were fully allocated. We returned home and slipped back into the flow of busy family life! I actually forgot about this pact until the other day, while on a walk up the same hill, with one of said daughters, currently in college. Something about the walk sparked a memory and I was able to share this story, knowing that we had accomplished our dream, having purchased a beautiful little condo the previous March.

So, shoot for the stars and you can walk in star dust!

Yoga on the Beach: Los Cabos Vacation

Yoga on the Beach on our Recent Los Cabos Vacation

Wayne and I spent a busy week in Los Cabos recently, getting the condo ready for the rental season. It was a vacation from work at home but were we ever busy!

During the busyness of life yoga and coming back to my breath is my sanity.

I have been blessed with a friendship with Ivonne Lopez, who teaches the beach yoga classes at our Casa del Mar development.

Here is us with some honeymooners who attended class. It was a fabulous class!

Women ~ Health ~ Inspired Eco Living: Book Review

Book Review

I am re-reading “A Thousand Names For Joy:Living in Harmony With The Way Things Are by Byron Katie with Stephen Mitchell.

When I am feeling “all tangled up emotionally”, reading this book (based on the Tao de Ching), never fails to soothe.

Every time I read this book, I feel I go deeper with the concepts and with my own learning.

I can understand how someone may have a problem with the content too, as it causes one to challenge what we think to be true.

I highly recommend this book for anyone on a journey of personal growth and inquiry.

Topaz Lotus Inspired Eco Living: The Beauty of Meditation

The Beauty of Meditation

Meditation creates ‘pure space’ between thoughts and feelings.

It allows one to detach from strongly held beliefs that no longer serve.

Meditation is ‘spring cleaning’ for the mind.
