Women ~ Life ~ Health: Monday Mornings Back To Work

I needed a little help getting going this Monday morning when my alarm went off at 5:15 am and then I thought of all the parents and athletes from the Olympics who have all likely had many, many early mornings!

I thought too of folks single parenting and those who do runs and bike rides and paddles all for cancer research.

So, here I am, with runners on, heading out for a run and then a wonderful full week of work!

I am motivated by others dedication and the great work we are currently doing in our prenatal health coaching and yoga with vulnerable pregnant moms!

Have a fabulous day beautiful wise women!

Women ~ Life ~ Health: Self-Care is not Selfish aka a Living a Life in Balance

In my last blog post, I listed 7 key life coaching tips or words of wisdom,  for help in obtaining and living a ‘life in balance’ for women.

Tip # 1 is – Put yourself at the top of the list of priorities!

Many women I work with say, “Hey, I couldn’t do this, that would be selfish.  What about my kids?  What about my work? My family?”.

The intention with this ‘life coaching tip’ isn’t that you forget about your caring and your relationships.  Rather, it is taking a slightly different look at life and life beliefs.

In our current culture, we are still feeling the influence of ‘agricultural society values’ from yesteryear, where physical strength and pregnancy/birthing were two key factors in identifying roles.  Add in old time Christian teaching that ‘the man is the head of the household’ and the end result is that without personal reflection and inquiry, many women fall into a ‘victim’ role in the family and community, without even knowing it.

Self care is really about knowing yourself well.  Knowing what your emotional and physical needs are, what your values are, when you feel taken advantage of, when you feel overwhelmed, when you feel fully nourished, balanced and fulfilled.

Here’s an example…. Jane is a working mom, trying to balance making lunches, driving to school and soccer practice, work, groceries, spending time with her guy, seeing her parents … you get the picture!  She’s in survival mode, always on the brink of overwhelm.  Every 6 to 8 weeks though, she  gets sick with a cold type illness and needs to ‘crash’ for a few days.  Though she feels guilty for missing work, she kind of relishes the ‘sick days’ as she gets cared for with things like ‘hot tea in bed’ and can stay home in bed and read all day, while her hubby drives kids to school and makes meals.

What’s the pattern here?  It’s push push push …. crash; push, push, push …crash!  It’s speaks to her relationship with her husband and role allocation.  It speaks to her family of origin (I’ll bet this is how her mom did life), it speaks to what she is modeling for her kids (you only get to read in bed all day if you are sick).

With good self care, how could Jane’s pattern be different?  If she understood her socio-cultural conditioning, her deep emotional, physical, psychological, spiritual needs; she would have a solid foundation to clearly ask for what she needs from those in relationship with her.  For example, she could re-negotiate role responsibility with her husband, she could set up a car pool for driving to soccer etc.  Also, Jane realized that she had completed stopped her yoga, which she had previously really enjoyed.  Jane joined a yoga studio and also booked in a series of therapeutic massages.  Although the massage therapy was totally covered through Jane’s extended medical plan, she had been too busy to even explore her benefits!

By being clear on her own needs and ensuring these needs are met, Jane is giving her self great self care and therefore feels happier and more in balance.  Jane realized that she had been only doing things for herself once all the other ‘to dos’ were completed. Now she is at the top of the list and can care for others from a solid inner balanced core of emotional and spiritual strength!

Give it a try my beautiful friends!

Women ~ Life ~ Health: The Importance of Family Gatherings

We had a wonderful day yesterday, re-connecting with extended family!

My ‘sister in love’ from Philadelphia was in town with her new guy and it was so fun to chat about the socio-cultural differences between Americans and  Canadians.

My husband is a ‘hybrid’ ie his mom was Canadian and his father American, and he lived in the US for the first 6 years of his life.  His older sister, Terry, was born in the US and grew up there most of her life and feels ‘American’, while my guy feels ‘Canadian’.  In my family, one brother moved to the US in the 1970’s and has lived and worked there ever since.  I say this to illustrate that we are certainly a big Canadian/American blended family.

During our get togethers, we often find ourselves discussing the differences between American and Canadians.  It is my personal opinion that Americans feel that ‘we’ are very similar and that Canadians feel that ‘we’ are very different.  We can have some very spirited conversations for sure!  Terry and Frank, being from the cosmopolitan East Coast, share many values with us West Coast Canadians, particularly in terms of gun control and politics.  We did find ourselves amazed at the differences in voting processes however.

Through out the evening, we were bathed in the warm glow of big family gatherings and are very happy to welcome to members to the ‘clan’.  We were also blessed with having ‘Uncle Don’ join us in his 86th year.

Enjoy your beautiful day my friends!

Women ~ Life ~ Health: Family Summer Vacations

Yes, it is possible to go on a fun sailing holiday with adult ‘kids’.

Our experience is that everyone reverts to childhood, even the parents (part of the time). We have hot cocoa and bedtime stories (the difference is they tell them to us) and tons of reading and candles and charades, lots of laughs and lots of hugs!

In case you are interested, I’m currently reading “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed for our book club discussion in September!

Enjoy your beautiful summer day and hug your kids extra lots.

Women ~ Health ~ Life: A Summer Sailing Vacation Nourishes My Soul

I am slowly feeling re-energized and have been reminded how important it is to take time off!

Recently, and totally unconsciously, I got back on the treadmill, albeit, a ‘health’ treadmill. I over did ‘life’ by over scheduling and even though it was all activities I love, my energy was depleted.

Life coaches should know better, right?

Well, this life coach miscalculated. I felt the adrenalin rush from thinking I could do it all, from feeling almost invincible. My body feels different too, shallower breathing, and a kind of vibrating intensity.

So, now, I’m sitting on our sailboat, in Plumper Cove, off Keats Island, on the Sunshine Coast of BC, being gently rocked by the sea.

Ahhh, this is nourishment for my body and soul.

Women ~ Life ~ Health: An Inspirational Rumi Quote to Start the Day!

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
People are coming back and forth across the doorsill
Where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.

Women ~ Health ~ Life: An Inspirational Quote & Poem by Mary Oliver

Enjoy this beautiful poem and words of wisdom by wise woman Mary Oliver
and
what do you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

The Summer Day

Who made the world?

Who made the swan, and the black bear?

Who made the grasshopper?

This grasshopper, I mean–

the one who has flung herself out of the grass,

the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,

who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down,

who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.

Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.

Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.

I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down

into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,

how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,

which is what I have been doing all day.

Tell me, what else should I have done?

Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?

Tell me, what is it you plan to do

with your one wild and precious life?

Leadership & life coaching to set your heart on fire & soothe your soul!

Women ~ Health ~ Life: An Inspirational Day at the Vancouver Folk Festival

As part of my self-care, personal inspiration and summer fun, my husband and I are heading off to the Vancouver Folk Music Festival today.

Hopefully, we will be on our sailboat ‘Orion’, anchored off Jericho Beach. If not, we simply walk along the path and soak up the music and wonderful vibe!

The Folk Music Festival is a Vancouver institution and we have been going for many years. One sees all manner of hippies (young, old, new) and we always run into friends. The music is great too.

When I think of the folk festival, I am reminded of these words of wisdom from Janis Joplin

“Don’t compromise yourself. You’re all you’ve got.”

In Vancouver, there are certainly unique wild and wonderful characters who have lived life with no compromise and they all seem to gather at the Folk Festival!

Have a great day friends! Peace out.,,

Women ~ Life ~ Health: Prenatal Yoga & Celebrations

Final day & celebratory circle for prenatal yoga teacher training, what a wonderful adventure!

I loved meeting the other participants and as always, enjoyed expanding my knowledge base.

I guess it’s self evident to say that I encourage all my life coaching clients to engage in some type of body centered practice like yoga. The body is our gateway to life transformation and deepening fulfillment, not to mention life balance and stress reduction.
