Women ~ Health ~ Life: Personal Reflections from a Yoga Life Coach

Women ~ Health ~ Life: Personal Reflections from a Yoga Life Coach

Sometimes, I feel like if I could just throw my head (actually my brain, no actually me thoughts) away, it would be the best thing in the world!

I have been driving myself crazy!

Oh my goodness, sometimes my curiosity and love of learning feels like it ‘bites me in the bum’!

Here is what is going on. Through out years of recovery from the addiction of alcoholism, spiritual reading ranging through New Thought Christianity, Buddhism and Yoga Philosophy, yoga and coach training, grounded in a foundation of Christian family values and an education that included psychology courses, I have learned to intellectually understand and be aware of my patterns of thought and self programed behavior. The result is that I have come face to face with the basic anxiety and edginess of life, full on with no way to dull this very uncomfortable feeling.

In my past I have used food, alcohol, work, technology, money/spending, books, exercise, planning, daydreaming, arguing, drama, sleeping (and I could go on) to dull or eliminate the deep restlessness and edginess that I understand may be present in many of us who live in the Western world. I try to push this feeling away, to deny it, to make up stories so that other people are responsible for this feeling and, wow, it is exhausting! I am exhausted by my thoughts, stories and dramas I have made up! I have tried ‘pushing all this away’, only to find my internal dialogue heating up and getting louder.

I have had no choice but to allow my feelings of restlessness and edginess to ‘just be’. I finally was so mentally tired from all the ‘squabbling’ in my brain and body, that I basically gave up. I stopped trying to push the discomfort away and in the allowing, I have found some semblance of gentleness and serenity. In the past I may have congratulated myself and said ‘oh great, I finally figured out life, now, I can really start to live well and teach others how to do this too’, however, what I have learned is that this self-congratulatory sentiment is often followed by a disagreeable life circumstance that quickly returns me to a sense of being incredibly humbled by my own arrogance!

So, with gentleness and unconditional love and self-acceptance, I go out to greet the day.

Women ~ Life ~ Wisdom: The Power of Yoga

Topaz Lotus Living: Women ~ Life ~ Wisdom – The Power of Yoga

As I have written before, I have been practicing yoga on and off for many years and have considered myself as regular yoga practitioner for around 15 years. The deeper I go with y0ga, in terms of the asanas and the philosophy though, the more I realize how many ‘layers of the onion there are’!

I had lunch with a dear friend Victoria recently, and she remarked that she was surprised to hear that I consider my yoga teacher training to be transformational. After all I am a trained and experienced body centered life coach and am well seasoned in other elements of life and spirituality as well.

I can’t give a scientific explanation, however, there is a mystical, abstract component to the practice of yoga, that transcends science, anatomy and rationality. It seems that in the practice of the asanas of yoga, one taps into the superconscious energy stream that is ancient and current and massively alive.

I am so curious as to how yoga can inform the health and wellness for regenopausal women (to coin a term from the writings of Barbara Marx Hubbard) and I am sure I will be writing more about this.

Enjoy this magnificent day!

Holistic Health Tip & Inspiring Quote of the Day!

Topaz Lotus Living: Holistic Health Tip of the Day!

Holistic Health Quote:

‘Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’

~ World Health Organization, 1948

Healthy Life Tip:

Start a ‘body centered’ practice, not for just the purpose of exercise but in addition, for the purpose of ‘getting back into your body’ or ‘inhabiting your body more fully’.

You may wish to start and continue on a regular basis a practice like yoga, chi gong or tai chi.  Or, you may choose to start your day with a body scan or check in with your body through out the day to ‘hear your body’s messages’.

Finish your practice with mindfulness meditation.

Enjoy your day my friends.

Women ~ Health ~ Life: Am A Crazy To Be Taking Yoga Teacher Training At My Age?

Topaz Lotus Living: Yoga

So, it’s 6:05 am on a Saturday morning and I worked all week and did the household things as well.

I’m into my yoga gear and just finished some mindful mediation and am preparing to leave for day 3/24 of hatha yoga teacher training at Open Door Yoga in Vancouver. Am I crazy to be taking yoga teacher training at my age, I wondered before I started the course. Well, I found out pretty quickly that the answer to this question was a resounding ‘no’, for no other reason than I am finally learning how to do the poses correctly and be in alignment with my body.

I came first to yoga at a very young age and then left my practice of yoga for many years, returning to it about 15 years ago. I remember my first ‘back to yoga’ class. It was in a big cold cold room with a bunch of women and we did sun salutations for an hour. The yoga instructor was an ‘older’ European lady with great technique, however, I just didn’t get it.

My next class was on a vacation in Hawaii and I just happened on a ‘power flow’ yoga class. I hadn’t learned enough to ask what kind of class it was. I survived the class, felt I had a workout and still didn’t ‘get yoga’. A few other yoga classes of various types followed and it was always an experience of an exercise class.

It was on another vacation, this time to Yelapa, Mexico, that I finally ‘got yoga’. I was in triangle, and my amazingly cool and wonderful teacher, Judith (from Sky Temple Yoga, you should go) came and did a slight adjustment, and made a suggestion for another slight adjustment I could do as well. I made the shifts and it was like my whole body sighed and went ‘ahhhhhhh, finally.’ That was the class where I ‘got yoga’.

I have been known to sign up for many things that I did not complete, or found excuses not to attend, mostly in the evening ‘exercise class’ realm. I love walking, running, working out on my own time, however, have balked at the structure and commitment of a program.

With my ‘yoga teacher training’ it is different, it feels like ‘the whole me’ wants to go, not just my intellect, not just my body, not just my spirit, but the ‘whole me’.

No, I’m not crazy, I guess, I am grateful and excited to spend another wonderful day, with wonderful people, getting to know my body better and getting to know them better!

So, do yoga! It’s good for your mind, body, heart and soul!

Here is the sign at the base of the hill path to walk to Sky Temple Yoga in Yelapa!

The Simplicity That Comes From a Beautiful Summer Day and One Activity!

Mindfulness, Simplicity and Intention!

You know, I just spend about 20 minutes watering my flowers, however, I did it very mindfully and with intention!

Before doing the watering, I was kind of in a brain fog, after a busy, hot day.

After, I feel refreshed, clear and rejuvenated.

It’s about simplicity and mindfulness today.

In peace,

Inspirational Quote by a Very Wise Woman

“I love to see a young girl ((  ‘or woman’ Zoey’s words )) go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.”

Women ~ Life ~ Health: Yoga & Music Festival in Whistler – Synchronicity!

I’ve mentioned before how my family is my foundation and that I just totally adore my three hippie like daughters.

I guess a life coach should be prepared for this and it was with only a glimmer of a catch of breath that I accepted my daughter’s invitation to share a few days in Whistler with her. She really enjoys her self care, I say with a smile.

There were only 2 days that worked for both of us and after scouting the web for deals we were very excited to book into the Westin for 2 nights.

It was after the fact that I found out that Whistler is hosting “Wanderlust: a Yoga and Music Festival”!

I’ve been a yoga practitioner for over 15 years and I recently took a prental yoga teacher training course through Semperviva Yoga Vancouver.  My plan is to offer prenatal yoga classes as and add on to my life coaching for women in Vancouver.

You’ve gotta’ love the synchronicity as without my conscious intention, we will be up at Whistler during a weekend that combines three of my loves; my family, music and yoga! Thank you Universe.

Women ~ Life ~ Health: Monday Mornings Back To Work

I needed a little help getting going this Monday morning when my alarm went off at 5:15 am and then I thought of all the parents and athletes from the Olympics who have all likely had many, many early mornings!

I thought too of folks single parenting and those who do runs and bike rides and paddles all for cancer research.

So, here I am, with runners on, heading out for a run and then a wonderful full week of work!

I am motivated by others dedication and the great work we are currently doing in our prenatal health coaching and yoga with vulnerable pregnant moms!

Have a fabulous day beautiful wise women!
