Life Balance 3 Tips to Improve Your Holistic Health

Building on the theme from recent posts about summer energy, poetry and living in alignment with nature and her cycles, let’s weave in some of the teachings of the Tao Te Ching as a foundational theme in creating life balance.

Being brought up in a Western family spiritually grounded in Christianity, I wasn’t exposed to the Tao until my 30’s while on a spiritual quest following a family crisis. Do you find that crises often lead to spiritual growth? It was after reading The Life of Pi by Yann Martel that I decided to go deeper with the learning about the Tao. This may be a funny way to deepen learning, ie from a very enjoyable novel, however it worked for me! Since that time, the books that have helped my western mind understand the Tao have been ‘The Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu’ translated by Brian Browne Walker, ‘Change Your Thoughts-Change Your Life: Living The Wisdom of the Tao’ by Wayne Dyer and ‘A Thousand Names For Joy: Living in Harmony With The Way Things Are’ by Byron Katie.

Byron Katie’s book I found to be particularly powerful.

As a life coach and executive/leadership coach, the women I work with are often challenged to find a balance or equilibrium between making conscious and strategic changes on the one hand and allowing the gentle flow of life on the other hand. Another way to describe this dynamic is seeing the balance between striving towards change and being drawn towards your future. The Tao seems to be very helpful for the second part of this equation. The Tao reminds us that life is like water, it resides in the low places, over time it carves out deep valleys and can move mountains, and it is hard to grasp. I have found that the more I try to figure the Tao out, the more complex it becomes and if I allow my entire self to be open to it, I ‘grasp’ it more easily. So, the life balance learning is about honouring the Tao of life and the Tao of you.

Life Balance Tips Using the Tao, remember the second part of the equation above, :

1. Read something about the Tao Te Ching, you can pick one of the books above or simply do a quick search on the internet.

2. Ask yourself how your life is or isn’t like the Tao?

3. One of the dominant themes of the Tao is about water and flow, spend lots of time in the water (for fun) and ask yourself what you feel drawn towards? Interesting imagery is to imagine that ‘life’ is a gently flowing river and you are floating down in a beautiful kayak, can it truly be this effortless? Might you run up into a log jam or two? Might the current of the river move you beyond it? Play with this image and sink into the energy of the Tao to bring more balance to your life.

Topaz Lotus Inspired Living: Living Your Yoga

From “The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga’s Ethical Practice by Deborah Adele

One of the Niyama’s s which closely cooresponds to the Buddhist practice of ‘Sojong’ is:

‘Svadhyaya or Self Study’, Deborah writes “Svadhyaya, or self study, is about knowing our true identity as Divine and understanding the boxes we are wrapped in. This process of knowing ourselves, and the boxes that adorn us, creates a pathway to freedom.’

I love how our personality and actions are described as ‘boxes that adorn us’ and make us unique and that life is not about ‘perfection’ but about observation and awareness!

Enjoy this beautiful day!

Topaz Lotus Inspired Living: New Moon Magic!

Topaz Lotus Inspired Living: New Moon Magic!

While doing my meditative reading last night before bed, I chose Pema Chodron’s book, ” Living Beautifully: With Uncertainty and Change”, she writes:

‘There’s a practice in Buddhism called Sojong that gives us an opportunity to reflect on where we are in terms of refraining and, when we feel that we’ve really made a mess of things, to put that behind us and start anew.  Traditionally, Sojong takes place twice a month, on the full and new moon days.’

Last night was the ‘new moon’ and I’m going to start using the new and full moon and  14 day ‘lightposts’ for personal reflection and ask myself  “how I have done with my mind, body and speech in terms of  mindfulness, non-violence and unconditional positive regard for all”.  According to Pema Chodron, this practice is conducted at Gampo  Abbey in a group and without ‘self criticism or blame.’

Questions to oneself may be:

1.  What’s working in my life?

2. Why? What are the things I am doing to support this flow?

3.  What’s not quite right yet?

4. Why?

5. What do I need to do to ‘ease the edginess’?

Enjoy your day and the next 14 days until the full moon!

Women ~ Health ~ Life: Sacred Sunday Mornings

Topaz Lotus Yoga, Wellness & Inspired Living: Sacred Sunday Mornings

I treasure my Sunday mornings as currently, Sunday is the only day I have to luxuriate in bed, sipping coffee, reading and writing.  I sometimes pray for a cloudy rainy day so I can stay in my pj’s in bed all day!

At the moment, my bed contains moi, a kitty cat, pages from my yoga teacher training that I am reviewing, my iphone which I recently used to chat with daughter #1 who is currently in Singapore and which was also used at 0421 hours by daughter #3 to ask for a ride home, ipad on which resides the fabulous book I am currently reading for book club (‘To Be Sung Underwater’ by Tom McNeal) and an extra pair of reading glassess!

Daughter #2 plus BF are still soundly asleep.

My husband just left for his tennis league match after watching the French Open since early this am on the TV in our bedroom.  I feel like many areas of the world have been represented in my short morning, (insert chuckle).

Now, silence and peacefulness beckons.

Holistic Health Tip of the Day

Tip:  develop  your awareness of your mind body connection through your breath and through movement.  Taking your awareness inside and listening to your body’s messages allows you to deepen your sense of self and your health.

The Flip: take your focus off ‘diets’, exercise programs and self -improvement programs.

Let your inner wisdom  be your guide.

Topaz Lotus Living: Groovin’ on the Tunes!

Driving home from my wonderful Groupon purchased massage and sauna at phFresh Spa at The Sandman Inn in Vancouver (I highly recommend this treatment by the way, make sure you ask for Tara), I turned on the tunes.

Feeling somewhat nostalgic for University Days at the U of A in Edmonton, I played my fave’s from Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Jackson Browne.  I find that music has the power to take me right back into the emotions of the time and I found myself missing my hippie student Edmonton days and the friends I made in college.

I may have  also made some new ‘commuter’ friends as I did notice quite a few smiles  directed my way as I was singing at the top of my lungs in my Prius!
