Should You Meditate?

Should you meditate? Yes, I say, it could save the world. Does this sound over blown,  like I’ve been ‘smoking something’?

I recently completed “Altered Traits: Science Reveals How Meditation Changes Your Mind, Brain And Body” by Daniel Goleman and Richard J. Davis and the authors, who are researchers concluded that yes, meditation could change the world if enough people participated in it.

I include a quote from the last section …

“What if, by transforming our minds, we could improve not only our own health and well-being but also those of our communities and the wider world?” …

So, what if?

We envision a world where widespread mental fitness deeply alters society for the better. We hope the scientific case we make here shows the enormous potential for enduring well-being from caring for our minds and brains, and convices you that a litte daily mental exercise can go a long way toward the cultivation of that well-being.

Such signs of flourishing include increasing generosity, kindness and focus, and a less rigid division between “us” and “them”. In light of increases in empathy and perspective taking from various kinds of meditation, we think it likely that these practices will produce a greater sense of our interdependence on one another and with the planet.

When nutured on a grand scale, these qualities – particularly kindness and compassion – would inevitably lead to changes for the better in our communities, and our societies. These positive altered traits have the potential for transforming our world in ways that will enhance not only our individual thriving but also the odds for our species’ survival.

Now, off to meditate, have a fabulous day my friends, may you be filled with loving kindness, may you be well, may you be peaceful and at ease, may you be happy  …

Women ~ Health ~ Inspired Eco Living: Book Review

Book Review

I am re-reading “A Thousand Names For Joy:Living in Harmony With The Way Things Are by Byron Katie with Stephen Mitchell.

When I am feeling “all tangled up emotionally”, reading this book (based on the Tao de Ching), never fails to soothe.

Every time I read this book, I feel I go deeper with the concepts and with my own learning.

I can understand how someone may have a problem with the content too, as it causes one to challenge what we think to be true.

I highly recommend this book for anyone on a journey of personal growth and inquiry.

Topaz Lotus Inspired Eco Living: The Beauty of Meditation

The Beauty of Meditation

Meditation creates ‘pure space’ between thoughts and feelings.

It allows one to detach from strongly held beliefs that no longer serve.

Meditation is ‘spring cleaning’ for the mind.

Evening Prayers

For the joy of a summer day, we give thanks.

The the sound of the wind and the waves, we give thanks.

For the love of family and friends, we give thanks.

For the honor of being alive, we give thanks.

And so it is.

Topaz Lotus Inspired Living: Vancouver Yoga Teacher Training at Open Door Yoga

Vancouver Yoga Teacher Training: Open Door Yoga Vancouver

I recently completed my 200 hour hatha yoga teacher training at Open Door Yoga in Vancouver and I highly recommend this intense and incredibly well designed program!

With a conveniently designed program of meeting once per week on either a Saturday or Sunday, this course can easily fit into most schedules.

The quality of the instruction, I found to be exceptional.  As a adult learner, I often find myself bored to tears in many seminars and courses.  Not so, with the Open Door Yoga Teacher Training.  With a range of instructors and subjects, and utilizing a variety of multi-sensorial teaching methodologies, the program was transformational.

I started the program with the intention to deepen my personal practice and to add to my skills as a yoga instructor.  I finished the program with these goals met and as a somewhat different person.  I’m unable to find words to describe the difference, I just ‘feel’ deeper and broader and with real concrete something – the practice of yoga, to ground me daily.

For my next training, I plan to do the “Restorative Yoga” teacher training at Yogacara in August.
