Taking A Look At My Own Stuff: Reactivity

Following from my previous post about my knees hitting the floor, I’m still recovering from my fall and have admitted to myself that yes, in fact, my wrist is still wonky, so off I go to the Drs this pm. Not only that but my whole right side is still very sore in spite of epsom salts baths and ‘taking it easy’. Taking a metaphoric look at the meaning of injuring my right side is the topic for a whole other series of posts!

Perhaps I was a touch reactive when yet again, this time by my husband and in the presence of my 93 year old father who in fact does have a walker, my ‘needing a walker’ was brought up in jest.

Pema Chodron writes about her start as the ‘head person’ at the Buddhist Monastery in Nova Scotia, where she came face to face with her own stuff. I still enjoy reading her description of doing the dishes and being angry at the person who never did their share and re-read this portion frequently.

Down there on the pavement, I was face to face with ‘my stuff’; my flash temper,  my reactivity, hypocrisy, attachments, cravings, judgements. If taking a tumble wasn’t enough, I have my family to help   keep me humble.

Yes, our real spiritual work is allowing ourselves to accept our darkness, our reactivity, our ‘warts’, our areas of dissonance, not only accept but make friends with, and have compassion for. Ah, and in this, there is peace!

in love and peace,

Tapas or Self-Discipline

Tapas is the day to day choice to burn non-supportive habits of the body and mind, choosing to forsake momentary pleasures for future rewards.”

Topaz Lotus Inspired Living: A Beautiful Quote to Start Your Day

‘Gather all courage and take a jump.

You will still exist, but in such a new way

that you cannot connect it with the old.

It will be a discontinuity

. The old was so tiny, so small,

so mean, and the new is so vast. From a small dewdrop

you have become the ocean.

But even the dewdrop slipping from a lotus leaf trembles

for a moment, tries to hang on a little more,

because he can see the ocean…

once he has fallen from the lotus leaf he is gone.

Yes, in a way you will not be; just as a dewdrop

dissolves into the ocean, you will be gone.

But it is not a loss. You will be oceanic.

And all other oceans are limited.

The ocean of existence is unlimited’. ~Osho

Women ~ Health ~ Life: Words of Wisdom About Letting Go

‘Words of Wisdom’ to start your day:

‘A bird cannot hold its perch and fly. Neither can we grasp anything and be free.’

~ Deborah Adele

Deborah, in this chapter of her book ‘The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga’s Ethical Practice’ is writing about
‘Aparigrapha’ or ‘non-attachment’ and also says ‘Nonattachment does not mean that we don’t care. In fact, no attachment freeze us up to be immersed in appreciation of life and one another.’

I find the practice of ‘aparigrapha’ to be an interesting dance of observing and separating cultural and familial conditioning and expectations from the present moment.

Enjoy this moment in time.

Women’s Health Tips for Your Body, Mind and Soul

Two new concept applications to learn more about are ‘tensegrity’ and ‘FODMAPS ‘.

I’ve been researching both of these concepts first as part of my yoga teacher training (tensegrity) and then during an invigorating coffee meeting (chai tea for me) with a long time friend and fellow critical thinker Catherine Morley, I learned more about FODMAPS (components in food that mimic a gluten sensitivity).

If any of the above piques your interest, check it out for yourself.

Buckminster Fuller originally talked about ‘tensegrity’ as applying to the connective tissue of the human body.

Dr Shepard is the main researcher into FODMAPS , and if you have unexplained fatigue, aches, bloating and tummy trouble, you may wish to learn more.

Have a great day.

Topaz Lotus Wellness & Inspired Living: The Love of Family

I have many loves, my family, being on the water, friends, reading, coaching, sharing a good meal with special people, yoga, traveling; to name a few!

Tonight I’m excited to be able to combine quite a few of these.

We are hosting my husband’s extended family on our sailboat and hope for a clearing in the gloomy Vancouver weather to allow for a lovely toddle around English Bay.

It’s a very spirited group with broad interests and life experience and it will be a lovely way to end the work week. Being with family is good for my soul!

Salads, pizza and a ‘beverage of choice’ is on the menu.

Enjoy this wonderful day!

Topaz Lotus Wellness & Inspired Living: Quote of the Day

If we would only give, just once, the same amount of reflection to what we want to get out of life that we give to the question of what to do with a two weeks’ vacation, we would be startled at our false standards and the aimless procession of our busy days.”

~ Dorothy Canfield Fisher

Interesting thoughts about life and vacations!

Enjoy your day

Yoga Teacher Training at Open Door Yoga in Vancouver

It’s 6:25 am on a Saturday morning, I’m sipping a homemade latte, gradually waking up, staring to feel my energy and really looking forward to the day!

It’s Week 20 of a 23 week program of yoga teacher training and we are into the really fun part of training.  Today, we get to practice our postures and, best of all, learn more about Ayurveda with a lovely teacher named Angie.  I coincidentally attended her class this week and absolutely melted into the warm energy of her class.  We shared a chat about doshas, agreeing that we both have a lot of pitta fire.

More to come and enjoy your day!
