“Inrageous/Outrageous Self-Care Enchantments” aka Tips

A while ago, I found myself in the very interesting position of “putting my money where my mouth is”!  As a life and business coach, my work is to support other women to develop healthy, fulfilling and nourishing lives.  I love my work and I usually feel I do a good job with my own life too!

After a wonderful and energizing fall of lots of relaxation, time with family and being active outdoors, I felt health-wise, probably the best I have felt in years.  Imagine my surprise when my back went out!  I got the message very clearly that I needed to slow down.  In terms of commitments in my life, I was starting to get into that pre-Christmas frenzy.  Have you ever had something like this happen?  I was reminded of the following quote.

“Often people attempt to live their lives backwards; they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want so that they will be happier.  The way it actually works is the reverse.  You must first be who you really are, then, do what you need to do, in order to have what you want.”
-    Margaret Young

In the midst of the chaos and frenzy, I had lost touch with who I was!  I had been taking care of the pets, the kids, my work, supporting my clients and had forgotten to take care of myself!  Sound familiar?  If this resonates with you, check out the following “enchantments” for connecting with your essence and taking positively outrageous care of yourself!

Self-Care Enchantments

1.    Daily, check in and ask yourself, what message is my body giving me?  What activities/food/beverages/exercise does my body need more of?  What does my body need less of?  Listen to and act on the messages.
2.    Play hooky for a day!  Give yourself a surprise day off and luxuriate in the freedom.
3.    Make a list of all the areas, people, activities etc, in your life that are energy drains or “energy vampires” and start eliminating the energy leaks.  It may feel like your life becomes unsettled with this process initially, trust me, this will pass!

Inrageous/Outrageous Self Care Enchantments aka Tips

Inrageous/Outrageous Self Care Enchantments aka Tips

I recently returned from an extended stay in Yelapa, Mexico which included the final week as the POW retreat which I organize and facilitate. During this break and retreat from “usual life” I had the opportunity to reflect, renew and review. I was reminded of the importance of self care and how many of us can get so caught up in being caring of others that we forget to take care of ourselves.

Over the past few months I have been re-reading Jack Kornfield’s excellent book, “A Path With Heart” and during the retreat we discussed the section about the paradox of being “selfless” or having “no self” and having a healthy and strong “sense of self” and “true self”. Kornfield says “There are two parallel tasks in spiritual life. One is to discover selflessness, the other is to develop a healthy sense of self. Both sides of that apparent paradox must be fulfilled for us to awaken.” I would say that this can be applied to general life as well as spiritual life and helps to clarify the definition of “self-care”. Life coaches often talk about “self-care” and how important it is to put yourself at the top of the list.

For clarity and to launch the new feature, “inrageous/outrageous self care enchantments aka tips”, the tips are designed to support you to develop a healthy sense of self (your inrageous or inner work), so that you can go out into the world in your relationships, duties and obligations from a strong personal foundation and center. The metaphor that is often used is that of being on a plane and the safety talk, where the flight attendant reinforces that if you are traveling with children, that it is important to put your own oxygen mask on first, then help your kids with their mask. The principle is that if you are not being “well oxygenated”, you can’t help others.

So, the self-care feature is about taking care of you! It is about self reflection and self-awareness and enchanting both your inner and outer lives, it is about creating a healthy sense of self.

Enchantments for the week:

  1. Create time for yourself everyday, even if it is 5 minutes and reflect on what nourishes and enchants you.
  2. Put yourself at the top of your priority list.
  3. Let go of one “should do” this week.
