“Freedom is actually a bigger game than power.  Power is about what you can control, freedom is about what you can unleash. ” – Harriet Rubin

Strategies for Surviving the Sacred Silly Season – Part 3

This season, regardless of how one celebrates the sacred elements, can get out of control.  There are more social events, food is often richer and exercise routines can be more difficult to fit in.  With the days being shorter, one may also experience a “hibernation” effect resulting in reduced physical and emotional energy.  The result is that it becomes even more important to take really good care of yourself mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.  Use the following survival strategies for outrageous self-care to make it through the season.

Outrageous Self-Care Strategies to Survive the Sacred Silly Season!

-    Ease up on personal expectations for the season.  Think “maintenance” rather than “results” for now.
-    Make sure that the only fruits and vegetables you eat are not just the garnishes in your drinks!
-    Be aware of “shoulds” vs “really want to” in terms of obligations and let go of all the “shoulds”.
-    Create more “white space”, that is blocks of time with nothing scheduled.
-    Take time to do something special for yourself, whether that is a bubble bath, a pedicure or massage or an early night to bed with a great book.
-    Remember to take your vitamins.
-    Start your day with “gratitude”, remember what’s really important about this time of year!

Strategies for Surviving the Sacred Silly Season – Part 2

I use the words “sacred” and “silly” intentionally. This time of year is sacred in many religious and spiritual traditions. It is a time for connection with family, for honoring our spiritual source, a time for giving back, a time for being generous. Generosity is the broad theme for POW for this month. This season can also get totally out of control and very “silly”, leading to overeating, overspending and over-indulging in many ways.
So, here are the second in a series of strategies to survive the season and remember, as in the words of Julia Child “life itself is the proper binge”:

1. Stop and evaluate what makes this season really special for you.  Think of the concept of both “being” and “doing”.  What is special in both these areas during this season?
2. Remember previous years and what you loved about the time of year and what drove you crazy.
3. Create a plan for how you wish this year to be different. Ask yourself, “what has meaning and heart for me during this season”? What do I want to do more of this year and what do I want to do less of this year?

It's New Years Day For Your Soul

For many years I have linked in with the spiritual teachings of “New Thought Christianity” and in this teaching, the first Sunday in Advent is considered the first day of a new soul cycle.

So, today and in the next few days, consider your soul and your soul’s longings.  When I was doing my coach training we talked about the spirit and soul of life and business and had many discussions about the difference between one’s soul and one’s spirit.  I find the difference difficult to define using words but can more easily “feel” the difference.  What about you?

For me, spirit contains the immanence and transcedence of a power greater than myself that I tap into while my soul is more internally me, it is deeper and linked in with my consciousness.

I noticed that in my meditation this morning, my thoughts were drawn to planning for the next year.  I distinctly heard the call of my soul as it whispered gentle yet resonating messages of “alignment”, “service” and “integration”.

What is your soul whispering?
