This is a topic of importance and interest to me as I am winding down prior to my annual summer holiday and there is significant research to support the importance of taking vacations particularly for entrepreneurs.
Entrepreneurs are notorious for not taking extended time off, as the common feeling is that business will only happen when “the boss”, you, is there and that if you take a holiday, you could lose out on business or a big deal.
Here is what I have noticed, experienced and read about in terms of vacations and business success:
– the brain under the stress of everyday common concerns is not able to move into “creative mode” so visioning and brainstorming for business evolution and transition needs lots of “open space” and different environments.
– the happier and more relaxed folks are, the easier business flows. I have seen this played out in many real life situations where an entrepreneur returns from vacation to find numerous wonderful opportunities waiting.
– exploring new places and meeting new people can often spark a new and different way of seeing things, including your business.
– spending time focusing on you, as a person, separate from your business can allow you time to re-focus on what is really important particularly in the area of values. Our core life values will inform and impact our business whether we are conscious of our values or not.
So, take lots of time off this summer, explore new territory, ponder your values and relax. Both you and your business will benefit!
