Holiday Survival Strategies – Part 1

Maintaining life-balance during the holiday season can be tricky. Use the following questions to design your strategy for surviving the holidays with calm!

1. What does the term life-balance mean to you? How does the holiday season play into your definition?
2. Think of a time that you felt totally in balance, where all elements of your life flowed easily and effortlessly. Write about this time in your journal. What was significant about this time in your life? What elements contributed to your feeling of equilibrium? How did you feel about yourself and others at this time? What daily practices were you engaged in at this time? Get really clear about all of this and anchor your learning and remembering by writing down your answers in your journal.
3. Now, conversely, think of a time that you have felt totally out of balance, overwhelmed and out of control. What was going on in your life at this time? What was or wasn’t present in your life? How did you feel at this time? Write your answers in your journal.
4. Thinking of this “out of control” time, take your thoughts backwards slightly further to a time just before you felt out of balance. What signposts were present that alerted you to the upcoming disequilibrium?
5. Now, think of yourself as a “Being”. What activities, thoughts and behaviors enhance this sense of yourself? How can you incorporate these more into your life?
6. Create a drawing of a horizontal axis and a vertical axis. Label the horizontal axis “doingness” and the vertical axis “beingness”. Jot down your thoughts from the above questions along the diagram you made of the horizontal and vertical axis.
7. What was the difference is ease in completing the horizontal axis, the “doingness of life” vs the vertical axis or the “beingness of life”? Is there anything out of balance here?
8. What are the key features of balance you wish to maintain during the holiday season?
9. What actions do you need to take to support this ie the “doing”? What is the “beingness” you want to remember during this season?
