During my morning meditation today, I was reading the 29th verse of the Tao and accompanying message “Living by Natural Law” in the book by Wayne Dyer “Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life: Living The Wisdom of the Tao”. Included in this section was the wonderful poem by Naomi Long Madgett:
Woman With Flower
I wouldn’t coax the plant if I were you.
Such watchful nurturing may do it harm.
Let the soil rest from so much digging
And wait until it’s dry before you water it.
The leaf’s inclined to find its own direction;
Give it a chance to seek the sunlight for itself.
Much growth is stunted by too careful prodding,
Too eager tenderness.
The things we love we have to learn to leave alone.
This poem brought to mind a recent experience I had with a water lilly! Last week, I was very excited to add the water lilly to our little gurgling pond and immersed it in the water as instructed. I then tried to turn the lilly pads over to face the sum and arrange the pads to fit into the pond in a way visually pleasing to me. The lilly pads did not cooperate! I would gently turn and arrange and look back in a few minutes and the pads had gone back to the original arrangement.
This morning I looked at the pond and saw the lilly pads open and basking in the sun. The lilly pads had their own timing and agenda, and silly me to try and change this. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to learn (again) to live in the “harmony of natural law”!
