In many cultures and areas of the world, elder women are respected for their wisdom and life experience. Their aged beauty shines brightly and a depth of spirit is often evident.
In our modern North American ‘youth obsessed’ culture, elder women, and being one myself, seem to be made invisible.
Having never really experienced discrimination (other than subtle gender discrimination), being on the receiving end of ageism is quite an interesting experience and very humbling. To my surprise, it feels like it comes more from young women than from young men, however this opinion could be slightly skewed due to the company I keep.
My life lessons about aging include learning to be gracious in my age and to increasingly honor and respect those older and wiser than I!
So, I shall do my part to re-invigorate the powerful, beautiful, older, wise woman archetype and model respect of those who have walked many years on this dusty road of life.
